Barking and Dagenham council allocates £13 million for funding schools

Barking and Dagenham Council has invested in the future of its children by allocating more than £13 million for further investments in schools.

At present, “The UK education system is not meeting the needs of at least one in five children and young people, this includes the disadvantaged, vulnerable and underachieving,” According to, Professor Sonia Blandford, CEO of Achievement for All.

The main reason this funding has been approved is to improve and modernise schools in the area. The funding will be distributed across a wide range of projects including, health and fitness programmes, and will go towards increasing the number of Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support and places within the schools.

Three schools in the area; Trinity School, Robert Clack School, and Ripple Primary School will each receive £1 million to develop the infrastructure of the new permanent buildings.

In September 2018 Greatfields School will have an additional 30 school places available for pupils.

Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, cabinet member for educational attainment and school improvement, said: “The pupils of today become the leaders of tomorrow, so we are delighted to be able to commit further investment into their future.

“It isn’t a quick fix, but we have made significant progress on improving the standards in our borough and by working with schools, parents, and youngsters we are managing to provide a challenging but exciting educational experience.”

In the Barking and Dagenham area the council has spent about £100 million in the last three years improving and enhancing education in the borough.
