Park redevelopment could generate £1.1 million for the borough

Barking and Dagenham Council have agreed in principle on the redevelopment of Central Park in Dagenham, a move which could generate income of up to £1.1 million for the borough.

The council’s Cabinet gave the go-ahead to the scheme on Tuesday 16 October and it will now require the green light from the Environment Agency and planning approval.

The redevelopment will see an overhaul of the sporting facilities and substantial landscaping put in place.

New facilities will include an adventure play area, BMX track for toddlers and a £200,000 investment in the clubhouse at Dagenham Rugby Club. There will also be new paths, flowers and grass areas added as part of the park’s overall redevelopment.

Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, reacted to the news: “I am delighted that the redevelopment of Central Park has been approved. This decision reflects the council’s continued commitment to improving the borough’s parks and open spaces.

“I am confident that the revamped Central Park will provide first-class facilities that all our residents will be able to enjoy – so that no one in Barking and Dagenham is left behind.”

This news is the latest part of the council’s overall Parks and Open Spaces Strategy following on from the planned investment in Parsloes Park.

Residents will now be invited to attend consultation events held on Thursday 8th November and Saturday 10th November at CU London, Dagenham should they want to raise any concerns around potential disruption caused by the construction process.

The feedback will then be incorporated when an application for planning permission is submitted, to minimise the impact on residents.

Should the council get the green light on planning the work is anticipated to start in 2019.
