Living near supermarkets and green space most important for British renters

According to the latest research living near a supermarket, green space and public transport links are the most important amenities that people look for when trying to rent a home in Britain.

The survey from tenant referencing and insurance firm HomeLet has found that 50.9 per cent of respondents said that living near a supermarket was the most important factors outside of the property when looking for a home to rent.

A park or green space was considered important for 46.4 per cent, whilst 44 per cent of people valued good transport links as vital and 29.3 wanted to live near shops that opened late.

Just over a quarter (27.7 per cent) of respondents said they would even pay a higher monthly cost if they were able to be closer to a park and green spaces. It was also revealed that men were more willing to pay to live near desirable amenities including public transport links and supermarkets.

The survey also looked at the amenities that were the most off-putting. The results found that 70.5 per cent would be put off in an area had a high crime rate, whilst 64.2 per cent did not want to live near a sewage works, 45.8 per cent looked to avoid being under an airport flight path and 42.7 per cent would prefer to not be close to a prison.

Overall, women are more likely to be turned off by negative factors than men. However, people were willing to compromise if it meant a saving on their rent. For example, 41.1% would live in a home with the number 13 in the address if the rent was lowed, 27.8 per cent a nearby motorway and 26.3 per cent a telephone mast.

Rob Wishart, Group Data Manager at HomeLet said: “Everyone has their own needs and personal tastes when it comes to choosing where to live. Whether it’s having green open space or being in the hustle and bustle of a city centre, choosing where we call home can be a huge decision.

“Our research suggests that supermarkets, green space and public transport links are the most desired nearby amenities.”
